FERVENT HOUR, by LUTHER LAURENCE DOWRICK PRATT First Line: A sacrificial glow Last Line: An ecstasy of fire. Alternate Author Name(s): Pratt, Laurence | |||
A sacrificial glow Transforms the harvest's yield; Slow inward fires consume The brown grass of the field. The breathing cedars lift Warm incense in the sun; And through the leafy copses Crimson blushes run As ripe trees acquiesce To the searing-sweet embrace Of sultry autumn winds -- Priests of a pagan race. The god of autumn laughs, The flush of leaves mounts higher, Till every bush is bright -- An ecstasy of fire. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE WOOD MILL by LUTHER LAURENCE DOWRICK PRATT POSTHUMOUS by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON HOW TO GET ON IN SOCIETY by JOHN BETJEMAN TO DIANEME (1) by ROBERT HERRICK MEDITATIONS IN GREAT BEALINGS CHURCH-YARD by BERNARD BARTON FRAGMENTS INTENDED FOR DEATH'S JEST-BOOK: DAY OF SURPASSING BEAUTY by THOMAS LOVELL BEDDOES A SONG OF MARY by AGNES H.
