Is my child aware that I Fear and worry, wish and sigh? Fear that as the days go by Hope and joy for him may die. Worry lest his fortunes fail; Lest his haughty spirit quail If the adverse winds prevail And he cannot breast the gale. Wish his life may happy be, Noble, glorious, and free; Crowned with soul prosperity: Holy, wise, and heavenly. Sighing, for, perhaps he may With the debts of life to pay Someday in heart-anguish pray God to take his life away. Sighing, for I know that with All the glories life can give, He could only me forgive That I gave him life to live. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND AUTUMN SONG by KATHERINE MANSFIELD |
