SILHOUETTE, by IDELLA PURNELL Poet's Biography First Line: Green evening drooped in silence to the street Last Line: A motor carbehind a high-peaked hat! Subject(s): Automobiles; Mexico; Cars | ||||||||
Green evening drooped in silence to the street, Like a tired bird that flutters to its nest. The day's hard workers, thinking of their rest, Walked shadowy pavements home with sandalled feet. Serape-wrapped, sombrero-peaked, they passed Serene as clouds, remote as any star. Far down the road a rushing motor car Came toward me, and the yellow beams it cast From a bold headlight, flamed against a man Also approaching, and his silhouette Was cut against them darkly. And from that jet And yellow picture, slowly I began To see that Mexico is all of that: A motor carbehind a high-peaked hat! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...DRIVING ALONGSIDE THE HOUSANTONIC RIVER ALONE ON A RAINY APRIL NIGHT by WILLIAM MATTHEWS OLD SONG FOR THE BO by HAYDEN CARRUTH WHAT I'VE BELIEVED IN by JAMES GALVIN THE GREEN AUTOMOBILE by ALLEN GINSBERG THAT'S THE SUM OF IT by DAVID IGNATOW WINDSHIELD by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER PORTRAIT OF A MOTOR CAR by CARL SANDBURG REAR VISION by WILLIAM JAY SMITH DUET, WITH MUFFLED BRAKE DRUMS by JOHN UPDIKE |
