BLACK APRIL, by GRACE BROWN PUTNAM Poet's Biography First Line: Could god have meant the spring to hurt us so Last Line: Just one black night of agony? Subject(s): April; Depression, Mental; Grief; Spring; Mentally Depressed; Mental Distress; Sorrow; Sadness | ||||||||
Could God have meant the spring to hurt us so That wounds should ache when south winds blow? Must sweeter air and sun-warmed rain Bring back once more an ancient pain? And purple clouds that brood and drift Mean but a stab of anguish swift? Must sky-lines flowing free and far Revive the sting beneath a scar? And robin's song now hold a note That clutches at a parching throat? COULD God have MEANT the spring to be Just one black night of agony? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONOMA FIRE by JANE HIRSHFIELD AS THE SPARKS FLY UPWARDS by JOHN HOLLANDER WHAT GREAT GRIEF HAS MADE THE EMPRESS MUTE by JUNE JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 19 by JAMES JOYCE DIRGE AT THE END OF THE WOODS by LEONIE ADAMS |
