TO A CATERPILLAR, by ERMA KENYON RAEBURN First Line: Oh, tiny crawling thing upon the vine Last Line: Be mine the transformation so divine. Subject(s): Freedom; Liberty | ||||||||
Oh, tiny crawling thing upon the vine, How ugly, dreary, dull your passing day; Do you not long for beauty to design For you a form of lovely, bright array? Do you not pray that Freedom may unbind And break the bonds that hold you to this spot, This lowly world to which you are confined, A world where you are but a graceless blot? But sometime you will soar through fields of air, And feast on royal nectar, or entrance The dazzled eye with gorgeous hues you bear As free as all the beauty you enhance. Oh, crawling thing, your longings are as mine, Be mine the transformation so divine. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOVE THE WILD SWAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS AFTER TENNYSON by AMBROSE BIERCE QUARTET IN F MAJOR by WILLIAM MEREDITH CROSS THAT LINE by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE EMANCIPATION by ELIZABETH ALEXANDER CATARINA TO CAMOENS by ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING |
