Last Line: The swans with drifting curves wove the letters of your name.
Subject(s): Memory

At early dawn the sea looked dull and gloomy,
Its looking glass reflecting skies fleeced ashen white;
The sun sent a ray that spread its fingers plumey
And changed the silver sea to gold in amber light;
The glory held me spellbound, a memory thrilled me while
I saw in retrospection the sunshine of your smile.

I watched at noon the busy city highway,
Familiar as the skies yet ever new and strange;
It seemed a hurried pulse in the heart of my day,—
Such rushing here and there, just change and change and change:
A day-dream caught me then with a grip too tense and strong,
Your changing eyes were meeting mine in silent song.

It was at dusk when lights began to glimmer,
But still the sun-day world lay dim before my eyes,
I stood on the bridge and watched the swans meander
Among the rippling lights of buildings in disguise;
And then as if completely my senses to inflame,
The swans with drifting curves wove the letters of your name.
