COUNSEL WITH A WOUNDED HEART, by LOUISE CRENSHAW RAY First Line: What if the gold was heavy with alloy? Last Line: Fate has been generous and wisdom, blind. | |||
What if the gold was heavy with alloy? You found it precious for awhile; its giving Seemed lordly in your sight; it brought you joy And glorified the ritual of living. What if illusion was a panderer Who rendered you impervious to reason? For such oblivion do not censure her Or call her artifice a name like treason. O wounded heart, be grateful that you had A single coin to spend, a single hour When earth and heaven combined to make you mad, A god, no miracle beyond your power! By reckoning your treasure, you will find Fate has been generous and wisdom, blind. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HENRY ELLEN by LOUISE CRENSHAW RAY SAIL-BOAT (BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI) by LOUISE CRENSHAW RAY DRUMS AND BRASS by DONALD (GRADY) DAVIDSON THE LOVE POEM by KAREN SWENSON INTELLECT by RALPH WALDO EMERSON THE SINGERS OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) THE SLUGGARD by JOSEPH BEAUMONT LINES WRITTEN AT GENEVA by THOMAS LOVELL BEDDOES BALLAD TO THE TUNE - 'I'LL TELL THEE, DICK, THAT I HAVE BEEN' by PATRICK CAREY |
