THE AFTER SILENCES, by EDNA DENHAM RAYMOND First Line: No, not within the depth of grief, one grieves Last Line: And grieves and grieves and longs to be no more. Subject(s): Memory; Night; Silence; Bedtime | ||||||||
No, not within the depth of grief, one grieves. But in the long cold silences that come To stand like sentinels, who beckon from Each old and bygone joy; which ever leaves The shattered heart in pain. One then conceives The things that never can be overcome, The first great storm of grief does so benumb. No, not within the depth of grief one grieves. Within the hush that dwells behind the door Are memories that time can never fade, Those perfect golden hours that fate has stayed. While far below life treads a lonely shore And often kneels there in the still night shade And grieves and grieves and longs to be no more. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN |
