TWO CUTWORMS, by FLORENCE DAZEY REED First Line: I had a beautiful pansy Last Line: And whispered of hope. Subject(s): Flowers; Gardens & Gardening | ||||||||
I had a beautiful pansy, It was the only flower in my garden. I tended it with patient care, I watered it night and morning, I shielded it from the burning sun, And it rewarded me with blossoms, Delicate blossoms, that whispered hope. I went out one morning to water my beautiful pansy And the blossoms drooped faded heads, And the leaves were withered. I touched it gently with loving hands And it fell to the rich black earth. It was severed at the root. It would never yield me any more lovely blossoms Whose bright upturned faces Whispered of hope. I had a beautiful daughter. She was the only flower in Life's garden. I watched her with loving care, I showered her with tender affection, And she fed my hungry heart with blossoms of joy Delicate blossoms, that whispered hope. And she grew like the rarest flower In a sordid garden of failure. But a lover came through my garden And touched my beautiful flower. His kisses were hotter than mine; They scorched like the sun at noonday; They withered my delicate blossom, They left her faded and hopeless. I came to her gently with loving hands, But she slipped from my agonized fingers And the cold earth received her. My garden, my garden was empty! It would never yield me another blossom That looked up brightly And whispered of hope. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NOVEMBER GARDEN: AN ELEGY by ANDREW HUDGINS AN ENGLISH GARDEN IN AUSTRIA (SEEN AFTER DER ROSENKAVALIER) by RANDALL JARRELL ACROSS THE BROWN RIVER by GALWAY KINNELL A DESERTED GARDEN by GEORGE LAWRENCE ANDREWS NOT THE SWEET CICELY OF GERARDES HERBALL by MARGARET AVISON AN OLD GARDEN by HERBERT BASHFORD |
