Where the dim twilight dreams The crescent moon seems A mollusk-shell; Pearly and clear it beams Until each cassis gleams With the same spell. In the dark night, to what ear, Sad moon, do you appear And plaintively impel Your voice like the sound we hear Rolling far and near In the conch-cell? Divine moon, will your art Soothe my worn heart Where the tears well? To my dreams impart Your nocturnal dart The trees and flowers tell! In the tall, dark, vibrant pine Under its bark like wine Your strange songs dwell; Harmonious, benign, Your murmur the trees confine The winds compel. I shall keep in my hair Your stirring, if you care, Moon-caravel: Heaven is your shore, overcast or fair, As the shore is heaven, there For the shell. And as the pines bend Through the dusk, to send The nautilus' tune, My verses without end Your peaceful charm extend, Pale moon! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HALL OF OCEAN LIFE by JOHN HOLLANDER JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE FIGUREHEAD by LEONIE ADAMS |
