..... and today I laid away My infant son, Whose tiny feeble heart had scarce begun To send the warm blood coursing through his veins. His life. .... the fruit of waiting and of pains. But he took One fleeting look Upon my face; And as I gazed I saw there was a trace Of Godliness that only mothers know. Dear Lord. .... to stand aside and watch him go. Death is sweet For those who meet A well-loved friend. I hope some angel mother will pretend That she loves him as I. And sweetly kiss His loneliness away. God, grant me this. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MY PARENTS HAVE COME HOME LAUGHING by MARK JARMAN BIRTHDAY (AUTOBIOGRAPHY) by ROBINSON JEFFERS LOOKING IN AT NIGHT by MARY KINZIE THE VELVET HAND by PHYLLIS MCGINLEY CURRICULUM VITAE by LISEL MUELLER CIVILIZING THE CHILD by LISEL MUELLER MISSING THE DEAD by LISEL MUELLER |
