EVOLUTION (ACCORDING TO MAETERLINCK), by FRANCES REUBELT First Line: Beneath the earth and hating sun and light Last Line: And climbs the radiant way to heaven and god. Subject(s): Dramatists; Evolution; Maeterlinck, Maurice (1862-1949); Plays & Playwrights; Poetry & Poets | ||||||||
Beneath the earth and hating sun and light The ugly termite crawls and delves in gloom Till everlasting blindness is its doom And, wings cast off, it knows not joy of flight. But from the same dark past, the same black night, Emerged the bee. It sought the air, perfume, And chose with wisdom every fairest bloom. So now it soars on high in pure delight. Thus Evolution does its course reveal, Thus Nature points her lesson, stern and plain, The destiny of man for woe or weal. One path leads down through fruitless toil and pain, One leaves the earth behind, the clinging sod, And climbs the radiant way to heaven and God. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ENVY OF OTHER PEOPLE'S POEMS by ROBERT HASS THE NINETEENTH CENTURY AS A SONG by ROBERT HASS THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN OXOTA: A SHORT RUSSIAN NOVEL: CHAPTER 192 by LYN HEJINIAN LET ME TELL YOU WHAT A POEM BRINGS by JUAN FELIPE HERRERA JUNE JOURNALS 6/25/88 by JUAN FELIPE HERRERA FOLLOW ROZEWICZ by JUAN FELIPE HERRERA HAVING INTENDED TO MERELY PICK ON AN OIL COMPANY, THE POEM GOES AWRY by HICOK.
