SONG OF THE BAPTISMAL CHIMES, by                     Poet's Biography
First Line: Philistines, grocers / the while that you know, sirs
Last Line: Roses.
Subject(s): Baptism; Children; Christenings; Childhood

Philistines, Grocers,
The while that you know, sirs,
Your wives,
Your wives,

And think of the little
Ones your transmittal
Gives lives,
Gives lives,

You see how the lad will launch
Forth with smooth chin, round paunch,
A notary,
A notary.

But to soundly punish you,
All the world another view
Will see,
Will see.

Your child—but you will never know it—
Undesired grows, and a long-haired poet
Discloses,
Discloses;

For they will always sing—
As from the dirt-pile spring
Roses,
Roses.
