MY WAGE, by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE Poet's Biography First Line: I bargained with life for a penny Last Line: Life would have paid. Alternate Author Name(s): Scollard, Clinton, Mrs. | ||||||||
I BARGAINED with Life for a penny, And Life would pay no more, However I begged at evening When I counted my scanty store; For Life is a just employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire, Only to learn, dismayed, That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have paid. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALVARY by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE DEBT[S] by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE THE ONSET; A CALIFORNIA BEACH by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE THE SECRET by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE DARKNESS by GEORGE GORDON BYRON A BOOK OF AIRS: SONG 2 by THOMAS CAMPION HAPPY WIND by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES STANZAS ON THE DEATH OF A FRIEND by REGINALD HEBER ON HEARING OF INTENTION ..
