They tell us that in ancient times, a rod, Raised in a leader's hand, sufficed to part The Red Sea's swirling waters. At the start, Brought out as captives by the hand of God, Israel, so says tradition, walked dry-shod Across the sea-bed, and with valiant heart, Conquered the desert with deific art, To reach their promised country's sacred sod. This wonder is repeated every day, When tides of traffic, with resistless power, Halt at the lifting of a magic rod, That travellers contrawise may cross their way. So, giving place a hundred times an hour, Men win their way by joining hands with God. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY COWARDS OF THE AIR by ARDEN MURDOCK ROCKWOOD |
