GAYETY OF FLAME: BEYOND ANGER, by EDWARD MERRILL ROOT Poet's Biography First Line: Why seize on words like boulders and then throw them Last Line: Splendid above the glory or the shame. Alternate Author Name(s): Root, E. Merrill Subject(s): Sonnet (as Literary Form); Sun | ||||||||
Why seize on words like boulders and then throw them Crashing titanic on the spawn of earth? Yes, men are men! -- ignore them now you know them: Spendthrift of anger, what is anger worth? Desist from fury, human all too human: Joy, rather, with the frolic winds that run Flying white clouds for kites. Leave man and woman To the sure justice of oblivion. Still through the vast blue spaces of the morning The sun is rising like a stormy fire Superb in exultation, never scorning Earth, though he shines on mountain or on mire. Live like the sun: a gayety of flame Splendid above the glory or the shame. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOURNEY INTO THE EYE by DAVID LEHMAN AGAINST EXCESS OF SEA OR SUN OR REASON by WILLIAM MEREDITH WHY I WAKE EARLY by MARY OLIVER CONTRA MORTEM: THE SUN by HAYDEN CARRUTH SERPENT SUN EYE BEWITCHING MY EYE by AIME CESAIRE CARPENTER OF ETERNITY by EDWARD MERRILL ROOT |
