THE WOODMAN AND THE SANDAL TREE, by                     Poet's Biography
First Line: Beside a sandal tree a woodman stood
Last Line: And good for evil give, and love for hate.
Subject(s): Charity; Philanthropy

BESIDE a sandal tree a woodman stood
And swung the axe, and while its blows were laid
Upon the fragrant trunk, the generous wood
With its own sweet perfumed the cruel blade.
Go, then, and do the like. A soul endued
With light from Heaven, a nature pure and great,
Will place its highest bliss in doing good,
And good for evil give, and love for hate.
