THE WOODMAN AND THE SANDAL TREE, by JOSE ROSAS MORENO Poet's Biography First Line: Beside a sandal tree a woodman stood Last Line: And good for evil give, and love for hate. Subject(s): Charity; Philanthropy | ||||||||
BESIDE a sandal tree a woodman stood And swung the axe, and while its blows were laid Upon the fragrant trunk, the generous wood With its own sweet perfumed the cruel blade. Go, then, and do the like. A soul endued With light from Heaven, a nature pure and great, Will place its highest bliss in doing good, And good for evil give, and love for hate. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOW THE GREAT GUEST CAME by EDWIN MARKHAM CHARITY OVERCOMING ENVY by MARIANNE MOORE PASSING IT ON by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE THE IDEA OF SOUP by NORMAN DUBIE THE [EXCELLENT] BALLADE OF CHARITIE by THOMAS CHATTERTON SONG OF THREE SMILES by WILLIAM STANLEY MERWIN RECUERDO by EDNA ST.
