BEGGARS, by BESSIE MAAS ROWE First Line: Like eve I coveted untasted things Last Line: His, but a twisted body in the rain. Subject(s): Begging & Beggars | ||||||||
Like Eve I coveted untasted things, To travel far in distant, magic lands; I craved the easy comfort fortune brings, And cursed the rings of bondage on my hands. I felt disheartened, discontented, poor, And railed at fate, that I should lack so much; A beggar knocked upon my kitchen door, A crippled beggar, leaning on a crutch. Great flecks of sleet were clinging to his beard, As humbly this poor beggar bowed his head; The hopeless tears of age his eyelids seared, "I roved the earth, and now I plead for bread." Mine was a beggared soul, conjuring pain, His, but a twisted body in the rain. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...GENERATIONS by LUCILLE CLIFTON HUMAN INTERLUDE by JACK HIRSCHMAN AFTER UNGARETTI; I.M.
