FIRELIGHT, by MARGARET RUSH First Line: Tonight a picture haunts my blazing fire Last Line: I would not have him as a gift ... Today. Subject(s): Memory | ||||||||
Tonight a picture haunts my blazing fire ... A vivid memory of long ago ... The merry flames, splashing a ruddy glow Across the polished flooring, dance up higher And I can see again a burning pyre Of letters, turning ashes ... feel the woe And desolation only youth can know When life has lost its hope and heart's desire. I knelt, a tearful girl so young, unlearned, That I despaired of finding love again. With trembling hands I crushed my dreams and burned His letters ... watched them flame. I hated men! ... And now I smile to think I felt that way: I would not have him as a gift ... today. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEMORY AS A HEARING AID by TONY HOAGLAND THE SAME QUESTION by JOHN HOLLANDER FORGET HOW TO REMEMBER HOW TO FORGET by JOHN HOLLANDER ON THAT SIDE by LAWRENCE JOSEPH MEMORY OF A PORCH by DONALD JUSTICE BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE THE TOWER OF SKULLS by ISAAC ROSENBERG A POET'S FANCIES: 8.
