It happened in the cold and starlit dawn. I do not know from whence it came nor why, Nor do I know if God chose me, or I Awoke and saw what I had looked upon Unseeing until then. The scales were gone That had so long obscured my biased eye. The challenge lay before me, spurring high My spirit, like a flaming sword just drawn. But yesterday, it mattered what the world Might say. It mattered that I ate and slept. Today, a cause has overshadowed all. It matters not today if I be hurled Into the deepest pit where man has wept. I know the cause shall stand, though I may fall. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY |
