RETROSPECT, by ESTHER L. SCHEDIN First Line: It seems but yesterday the buds were swelling on bare boughs Last Line: "and say, ""it seems but yesterday that we were there." Subject(s): Time | ||||||||
It seems but yesterday the buds were swelling on bare boughs And we, with bated breath, listened for the trill of bird To herald summer's coming. Searched out with eager eyes the frail, sweet flowers of spring, And watched through sunny hours earth's promises fulfilled. But now the leaves are falling, red and brown, and gold, Tossed, whirled and driven at the whim of winter winds. It seems but yesterday we two were at Life's Spring Our hearts atune to the ecstasy of things to be, Followed with rapturous eyes the gauzy flight of dreams, while Hope With torch held high made bright our onward way. So sunny years sped on, and now, at length We stand at Autumn's door, while sere winds Tear from reluctant hands dreams unfulfilled, That gleam the brighter as they fall. So may it not be on some far distant plane When we have left the floating panorama of the years, With hands still clasped we view the changing world of men, our hearts at peace, And say, "It seems but yesterday that we were there." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD FROM THIS HEIGHT by TONY HOAGLAND |
