ENVISIONED MEMORIES, by GEORGIA PERLE SCHMIDT First Line: Morning mists hang heavy over Last Line: Of the sun. Alternate Author Name(s): Schmidt, G. Perle Subject(s): Memory | ||||||||
Morning mists hang heavy over The sleeping city. Through unheralded Dawn I seek the Mission of San Jose! I am going there to pray -- Priests Have left the odor of incense -- Holiness and holy quiet lead me to The Blessed Virgin's shrine. I pause To ply a flame to the row of fresh White candles beside the Rose Window And ask for the repose of the soul Of my dead sister. I enter sacred rooms And pass beneath time-fingered thatched Roofs. In the courtyard an opalescent Chameleon scurrys across the dim etched Name on a tombstone. I climb the winding Stone stairs toward the bell tower. Something stirs in my brain or heart Or soul and I am weak. I can go no higher For my feet do not fit the narrow steps That feet of saintly black-robed Padres Have trodden. I turn away filled with Envisioned memories, knowing everything Is new each day and that shadows come When eyes are blinded by the brightness Of the sun. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEMORY AS A HEARING AID by TONY HOAGLAND THE SAME QUESTION by JOHN HOLLANDER FORGET HOW TO REMEMBER HOW TO FORGET by JOHN HOLLANDER ON THAT SIDE by LAWRENCE JOSEPH MEMORY OF A PORCH by DONALD JUSTICE BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE THE HANGING TREE by GEORGIA PERLE SCHMIDT |
