SIDEWALK PHILOSOPHER, by BLANCHE SCHOFIELD First Line: She did not hope to grace a royal ball Last Line: Because she could not wear a coronet. Subject(s): Apples; Dreams; Fruit; Philosophy & Philosophers; Nightmares | ||||||||
She did not hope to grace a royal ball But sat, uncaring, in her sunny stall And polished apples with a faded shawl; Content to sell her wares for copper pence, She kept alive no dream of opulence. She breathed, instead, the lyric atmosphere Of peace, from quiet year to quiet year; With wrinkled fingers rubbed each satin sphere Of simple autumn fruit, and did not fret Because she could not wear a coronet. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN VARIATIONS: 18 by CONRAD AIKEN LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL APOLOGY FOR BAD DREAMS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GIVE YOUR WISH LIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS |
