NOCTURNE, by WILLIAM GREENOUGH SCHOFIELD Poet's Biography First Line: So hand in hand again, through scented dark Last Line: We now keep walking all the deadly while. Subject(s): Moon; Walking | ||||||||
So hand in hand again, through scented dark And timeless thoroughfare, beneath cascades Of balconies and vines, and you remark: "How nice -- the thin uncertainty of shades -- You know, the moon seems blue; the yellow shine Of lamplight over doorstep -- something nice About it." Yes -- your steps again with mine, The moon again our private butter slice; But much is out of keeping, much is wrong: In place of sand beneath our feet, is stone, That other background of compelling song Becomes a praline vendor's minor tone, And where we paused -- a moment, then a smile -- We now keep walking all the deadly while. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SPRING DAY: WALK by AMY LOWELL WALKING-STICKS AND PAPERWEIGHTS AND WATERMARKS by MARIANNE MOORE I GUIDED THE LONG TRANSHUMANCE OF THE HERD by AIME CESAIRE THE TREES OF MADAME BLAVATSKY by NORMAN DUBIE THREE MEN WALKING, THREE BROWN SILHOUETTES by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER |
