THE hawthorn bud said to the star:
"Bright astral Queen of Loveliness,
From azure pure and lunular
Thou lookest down on my distress.

"Yet can'st thou see me light the lawn
Ascending to the coppice frore?
I am the star that greets the dawn;
To-morrow I shall be no more.

"Thy court gems heaven's portico.
What need hast thou to weep the day?
I pulse and petal as the snow,
But thou shalt live in light alway.

"O Star, would I were there with thee,
A beacon of the firmament,
All naked to eternity,
O'er night and time omnipotent."

"Sweet hawthorn bud," the star replied:
"In quiet steep thy heart's distress.
Shine on in peace the hill beside
And envy not my happiness.

"I burn in silence, sad and lone,
And to the void my bosom bare.
I search the trackless and unknown,
But ne'er discern my sister there.

"O hawthorn bud, mine is the dearth;
Thou wast not born to dwell apart.
Beam o'er the bosomed green of earth
And spill the perfume of thy heart.

"Ah, would I were the eglantine
With but one spring in which to flower!
Ah, would thy happy lot were mine
-- To love and die within an hour!"
