THE GYPSY CALL, by EMMA THOMAS SCOVILLE First Line: You wonder why I chose this gown Last Line: Will roam the fields in gypsy gown. Subject(s): Gypsies; Wandering & Wanderers; Gipsies | ||||||||
You wonder why I chose this gown, This flowery, crimson-flaming thing? I am a gypsy vagabond In country fields where robins sing! I locked dull care behind strong bars To live these glowing dreams of mine; Then chose this crimson, gypsy dress And hung my plain one on the line. I left the hard, swift road folks go, For soft, lush grass beneath my feet; And climbing up a sun-drenched hill I found wild berries ripe and sweet. Beyond the measured tick of clock, The clean winds sweep the fields and sky, My heart beats fast with life's red wine And wonderingly you question why? Tomorrow in a four-walled space I'll heed Time's tick, in somber brown ... But all day long the I that dreams, Will roam the fields in gypsy gown. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE ASSIMILATION OF THE GYPSIES by LARRY LEVIS THE SCHOLAR GIPSY by MATTHEW ARNOLD THE GYPSY by PHILIP EDWARD THOMAS TO A GIPSY CHILD BY THE SEA-SHORE by MATTHEW ARNOLD THE GYPSIES [OR, GIPSIES] by HENRY HOWARTH BASHFORD A PURPLE HEART BADGE by EMMA THOMAS SCOVILLE |
