IN THE BEST LIGHT, by BLYTHE GWYN SEARS First Line: There is a lively portrait on my wall Last Line: Condemn her act? Real love should sense no slight. Subject(s): Portraits; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
There is a lively portrait on my wall, The radiance of soul shines from the face; One scarcely sees the little cap of lace Or breast-pin fastening the woolen shawl. I've hung the portrait where no shadows fall To dim the beauty of its inner grace; It occupies a favored sunlit space Above some other pictures in my hall; And yet, today, I failed to understand A cherished friend. I've judged her all day long, Nor would I view her motive in the light Of charity. But should she not command A sunlit spot where no dark thoughts of wrong Condemn her act? Real love should sense no slight. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI COMING DOWN TO THE DESERT AT LORDBURG, N.M. by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
