IN THE BEST LIGHT, by
First Line: There is a lively portrait on my wall
Last Line: Condemn her act? Real love should sense no slight.
Subject(s): Portraits; Sonnet (as Literary Form)

There is a lively portrait on my wall,
The radiance of soul shines from the face;
One scarcely sees the little cap of lace
Or breast-pin fastening the woolen shawl.
I've hung the portrait where no shadows fall
To dim the beauty of its inner grace;
It occupies a favored sunlit space
Above some other pictures in my hall;

And yet, today, I failed to understand
A cherished friend. I've judged her all day long,
Nor would I view her motive in the light
Of charity. But should she not command
A sunlit spot where no dark thoughts of wrong
Condemn her act? Real love should sense no slight.
