ONE LEFT SORROWING, by MARTHA LYMAN SHILLITO First Line: They talked of everything but what they Last Line: Sat dreaming hours away while hot tears fell. Subject(s): Farewell; Parting | ||||||||
They talked of everything but what they yearned To say. . . . A well-rehearsed and charming scene: Two women and a man, but each had learned His part too letter-perfect; too serene And smooth was every gesture. Even laughter Was forced and meaningless. . . . With wifely air, The older woman spoke her lines, then after A strained and sudden pause, rose from her chair To make proprietary claim upon The man who lingered for a last farewell . . . And she who stayed behind when they had gone Sat dreaming hours away while hot tears fell. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE THREE CHILDREN by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN STUDY #2 FOR B.B.L. by JUNE JORDAN WATCHING THE NEEDLEBOATS AT SAN SABBA by JAMES JOYCE SESTINA: TRAVEL NOTES by WELDON KEES TO A RAIL FENCE by MARTHA LYMAN SHILLITO |
