PERSPECTIVE, by MILLICENT SHINE First Line: Climb on; the moon, curved finger of mystery Last Line: To win this high, this ultimate, elation. Subject(s): God; Moon | ||||||||
Climb on; the moon, curved finger of mystery, Is beckoning. Cliffs edge against thin space With the finality of a lofty place. Great circling stars, like ships on the gloomy sea Of heaven, breast winds that try the various strength Of stars and men and the trees we left below. This ledge, where unimaginative cacti grow, Divides the sky by scarcely a man's length. Look down -- look down! The village lights are gleaming Lily petals soft on the river of night, And men seemed huddled, wisely kept out of sight: Is this how it looks to God from his height of dreaming? Then we are God, just now -- all, our creation. For this one moment the danger was twice worthwhile. All seekers face grave perils every mile To win this high, this ultimate, elation. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN THE MOON AND THE SPECTATOR by LEONIE ADAMS FULL MOON by KARLE WILSON BAKER NO MORE OF THE MOON by MORRIS GILBERT BISHOP THE DEPARTURE by DENISE LEVERTOV THE MOON IN GREECE by TIMOTHY LIU |
