FULFILLMENT SURPASSING, by HELEN REGAN SKILLERN First Line: They taught her marriage was a veil Last Line: In the halo round a child. Subject(s): Marriage; Weddings; Husbands; Wives | ||||||||
They taught her marriage was a veil (a shimmering veil), whose web would disclose only perfume and rose, its fragrance ascend and magically blend two diverse lives into one. She found that marriage is a board (a yawning board), for a loaf of bread on a clean laundered spread, for a bowl to use or an empty cruse to wash and fill again. She found that marriage is a bed (a hard, hard bed), where prayers are said and tears are shed, where life is bought and death is fought to his final conquering. She found that marriage is a shrine (a blessed shrine), in whose warm glow faith's flowers blow, earth wears a sheen and heaven is seen in the halo round a child. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A BLESSING FOR A WEDDING by JANE HIRSHFIELD A SUITE FOR MARRIAGE by DAVID IGNATOW ADVICE TO HER SON ON MARRIAGE by MARY BARBER THE RABBI'S SON-IN-LAW by SABINE BARING-GOULD KISSING AGAIN by DORIANNE LAUX A TIME PAST by DENISE LEVERTOV OLD MOTHER by HELEN REGAN SKILLERN |
