PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, by HELEN SORRELLS First Line: Her kitchen window opened to the west Last Line: Knew sunset was her one extravagance. Subject(s): Women | ||||||||
Her kitchen window opened to the West And framed each day the miracle that made The prairie less than prairie, more a bowl Of blended gold and rose and light and shade. Sunset was hers, enclosed in white pine frames, And if, too often, light bread burned because The miracle was too dazzling for her mind To grasp, at once, its brilliance and the laws That govern white cob fires and baking bread, The gods forgave her, though her family chanced To voice complaint. The gods, who knew her best, Knew sunset was her one extravagance. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ARISTOTLE TO PHYLLIS by JOHN HOLLANDER A WOMAN'S DELUSION by SUSAN HOWE JULIA TUTWILER STATE PRISON FOR WOMEN by ANDREW HUDGINS THE WOMEN ON CYTHAERON by ROBINSON JEFFERS TOMORROW by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD LADIES FOR DINNER, SAIPAN by KENNETH KOCH |
