THE MODERN MADONNA, by ALICE MAUDE SPOKES First Line: In paintings of the madonna and her child Last Line: "a gas-mask on his ""madonna and her saint." Subject(s): Christianity; Paintings And Painters; Religion; Theology | ||||||||
In paintings of "The Madonna and Her Child" Each master-hand has shown the mood he wore Within his breast, to guide his flowing hand Which established motherhood in Christian lore. And through advancing years we see the calm, Reflected features of a placid soul Adoring the Creation, God bequeathed Through love, for her to foster and console. Within the eyes of each Madonna, seep The wisdom that is born of every age; Into those lucid pools, there seems to creep A fear distilled within the artist's brain. So the master of the modern age will paint A gas-mask on his "Madonna and Her Saint." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY APOLLO AT LAX by KAREN SWENSON SONNETS FROM THE PORTUGUESE: 28 by ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING |
