TO DR. THEODOR CHRISTOMANNOS, by JOHN LAWSON STODDARD Poet's Biography First Line: Great lover of the upper world Last Line: Of thy beloved tirol. Subject(s): Love; Memory; Soul | ||||||||
Great lover of the upper world Of ice and stainless snow, Thy path through space we cannot trace From this dull plain below; But if to-night thy sky be bright, Or dark with driving storm, The loyal soul of old Tirol Still keeps thy memory warm. The Rosengarten's glowing cliffs Now bear thine honored name, And from to-day fair Karersee Shall share with thee its fame; For, sculptured high against the sky, Beside a graven scroll, Stands fiercely proud athwart the cloud The eagle of Tirol. Long may it guard with steadfast gaze This country of the free, And tell thy praise in other days To thousands yet to be! Like flakes of snow men come and go, But no more genial soul Shall ever climb the heights sublime Of thy beloved Tirol. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE CRUEL FALCON by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE WHOLE SOUL by PHILIP LEVINE I KNOW MY SOUL by CLAUDE MCKAY HONORING THE SAND; IN MEMORY OF JOSEPH CAMPBELL by ROBERT BLY THE CHINESE PEAKS; FOR DONALD HALL by ROBERT BLY THE LIFE OF TOWNS: TOWN OF THE EXHUMATION by ANNE CARSON A MAY MONODY by JOHN LAWSON STODDARD |
