POSEIDON'S BRIDE, by ELIOT KAYS STONE First Line: Poseidon comes riding, riding, riding, over the ocean to me Last Line: Come with poseidon for me. Subject(s): Atlantis; Brides; Mythology - Classical; Poseidon (mythology); Sea; Ocean | ||||||||
Poseidon comes riding, riding, riding, over the ocean to me; His horses are galloping, galloping, making white froth of the sea. Poseidon sits in his chariot; no one sits by his side, For Poseidon comes to Atlantis to carry me off as his bride. The naiads that play by the fountains, The nereids who sport in the sea, The gods of the vales and the mountains, Come with Poseidon for me. The dolphins are rolling, rolling, leaping and laughing with glee; The horses are galloping, galloping, casting white froth to the lee. Apollo is lashing his horses; Phaethon pours gold from the side, For Poseidon comes to Atlantis to carry me off as his bride. The gods of the lakes and the rivers, The gods of the sky and the sea Are coming. (Alas! My heart quivers!) They come with Poseidon for me. My heart is throbbing, throbbing, throbbing . . . Poseidon is hateful to me, And his horses are galloping, galloping, making a froth of the sea. Lovers have wooed me in plenty -- why stands there none by my side, When Poseidon comes to Atlantis to carry me off as his bride? I would offer the gods an oblation, I would hurl myself in the sea, But all the gods in creation Come with Poseidon for me. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HALL OF OCEAN LIFE by JOHN HOLLANDER JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE FIGUREHEAD by LEONIE ADAMS AT THE ARCH OF TITUS by ELIOT KAYS STONE |
