SPRING IN THE WOODS, by NINA GAIL STONG First Line: Away to the woods! Last Line: We miss those at our feet. Subject(s): Forests; Spring; Woods | ||||||||
Away to the woods! Where the shadows lie deep; The flowers have awakened From winter's long sleep, The air's richly laden With perfume so sweet, A violet carpet Is laid for our feet, A green leafy arbor O'erhead stretches high; Hear the song of the birds! See the blue of the sky! Here's jack-in-the-pulpit, With gay coat of green; Here's a buttercup maiden, The fairest I've seen; Here are pure white lilies And adder tongues gold; What wonderful treasures A spring day can hold. Here are fine green umbrellas, Should a sudden shower fall; Here's a toadstool to rest on, And here's a puffball. So we wander and gather The flowers at will; The springtime is ours, Our hearts with joy thrill. We gather in handfuls, How eager the quest; Flowers seen in the distance Seem brightest and best; On and still onward To a yet fairer land, Those picked first are withered By the warmth of the hand; So in life's search for pleasure Those beyond seem so sweet, In our mad rush to pluck them We miss those at our feet. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE PRINCESS WAKES IN THE WOOD by RANDALL JARRELL CHAMBER MUSIC: 20 by JAMES JOYCE ADVICE TO A FOREST by MAXWELL BODENHEIM A SOUTH CAROLINA FOREST by AMY LOWELL JOY IN THE WOODS by CLAUDE MCKAY IN BLACKWATER WOODS by MARY OLIVER |
