A DIVER, by                     Poet's Biography
First Line: Firm and erect on the board she stands
Last Line: Flashes the pink of a laughing face.
Subject(s): Diving & Divers; Water

Firm and erect on the board she stands,
Her head in the arch of her upraised hands;
A figure slight, but compact and trim
From tight-pressed fingers to ankle slim;
Like a chamois poised on a mountain crest;
Intense with motion, yet touched with rest,
Or a breathing image of Victory
With wings of joy for the flight to be.

Now swift as the sweep of an unsheathed sword
She springs with the send of the yielding board,
Plucking our hearts, as she plunges sheer,
To a breathless throb of delight and fear.
Look! How cleanly her form cuts through
The tranquil surface of mirrored blue;
Then out of the foam with naiad grace
Flashes the pink of a laughing face.
