MATINEE IDOL, by VIVIAN STRATTON First Line: I said: 'I will not love you. I shall be Last Line: By just one little kiss from you last night. | ||||||||
I said: "I will not love you. I shall be Unlike the other weak and stupid fools, Who flatter you at musical or tea, And flutter 'round you at the bathing pools." They treat you like a perfect Grecian god -- Of adulation, you have had your fill. No bitter, thorny way your feet have trod, With all of them you've had your every will. I thought I shall be cold to all you do, I'll snub you and will listen with disdain To any plea for love that comes from you, And fill your heart with longing's bitter pain. But, dear, my resolutions all took flight By just one little kiss from you last night. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VERY EARLY SPRING by KATHERINE MANSFIELD TO HIS MISTRESS OBJECTING TO HIM NEITHER TOYING OR TALKING by ROBERT HERRICK PETER QUINCE AT THE CLAVIER by WALLACE STEVENS INSCRIPTIONS: 2.
