MESSAGE OF AN ANCIENT POET, by LEONORA CLAWSON STRYKER First Line: I watched men digging in egyptian sands Last Line: "my love, your face is like a lotus bud." Subject(s): Poetry & Poets; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
I watched men digging in Egyptian sands, Toiling through sifting nights and into dawn To place an ancient wisdom in the hands Of modern men to read and ponder on. The hieroglyphics carved in blocks of stone Held messages conceived by priest and sage Who hoped that generations past their own Might find this record of a dimmer age. But when these secret documents were read, And all their mystic cipherings made plain, The most familiar message from the dead Of Pharaoh and Ptolemy's harsh reign Was this: some poet traced in plastic mud, "My love, your face is like a lotus bud." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI LAMENT by LEONORA CLAWSON STRYKER |
