THE VAMPIRE, by DOLORES SWART First Line: Once on an early may - day morn Last Line: Then love, a broken thing beneath your feet. Subject(s): Vampires | ||||||||
Once on an early May-day morn With Heaven's warm sunshine glistening on the dew, Wandering o'er wooded hills, sweet love was born; For I met you. Red were your lips, ah, red! And full of promise and of mad desire. You kissed me; Life was ecstasy, my heart A flaming fire. Too swiftly sped the day, Which foolishly I dreamed would last forever. Our world a paradise through which to stray, Nor death could sever. How could I know the selfish love of power, The mockery of your eyes, the vain deceit? Your glowing beauty, mine for one brief hour, Then love, a broken thing beneath your feet. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE VAMPIRE by RUDYARD KIPLING CURSE OF THE VAMPIRE by MARY FIELDS TO COLE, THE PAINTER, DEPARTING FOR EUROPE by WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT |
