THE BALLET RUSSE, by A. N. TANSEY First Line: The overture begins the spell Last Line: To heights beyond the ken of words. Subject(s): Ballet; Dancing & Dancers | ||||||||
The overture begins the spell, Alluring music weird and wild As winds upon the tartar steppes, As witches' wails with fagots piled All ready for the torch to set, Is poured into the waiting air To float as purple hazes do About the sunlight's golden hair. The dance begins, lithe bodies wreathe With symmetry in pirouettes. Enthralling spectacle of souls In throes of love and vain regrets. Incredible, unreal they float Through Persian harems like wild birds, Through strange Egyptian temples then To heights beyond the ken of words. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FAMED DANCER DIES OF PHOSPHORUS POISONING by RICHARD HOWARD ROSE AND MURRAY by CONRAD AIKEN A DANCER'S LIFE by DONALD JUSTICE DANCING WITH THE DOG by SUSAN KENNEDY SONG FROM A COUNTRY FAIR by LEONIE ADAMS THE CHILDREN DANCING by LAURENCE BINYON OUR LORD AND OUR LADY by HILAIRE BELLOC |
