The Blue and the Gray and the Olive-drab Are linked in my thoughts today; The Blue and the Gray and the Olive-drab Over my heart hold sway. Gray for my father, loyal and brave, Leaving his bride of a day, He marched where the Southland's Banner led, Proud to wear the Gray. Blue for the sire of the man I love, A stripling too young to fight, He served as messenger, tried and true, In the cause he thought was right. Olive-drab for the man of my heart, Who, at his country's call, Sailed for the blood-soaked fields of France, Ready to offer his all. When they came home, as, praise God, they did, Each in his quiet way Took up his life and carried on, As only a brave man may. Now each is at rest in his quiet grave, And as I sit alone today, I offer my thanks for my soldiers three -- The Olive-drab, the Blue and the Gray. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEMORIAL DAY by JOSEPHINE MILES MEMORIAL DAY FOR THE WAR DEAD by YEHUDA AMICHAI MEMORIAL DAY by MICHAEL ANANIA AN ODE ON THE UNVEILING OF THE SHAW MEMORIA BOSTON COMMON, MAY 31, 1897 by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH FREDERICKSBURG by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH THE DEATH OF GRANT by AMBROSE BIERCE MEMORIAL DAY by WILLIAM E.
