EN MASQUE, by IO SLOAN THERME First Line: Behind each mask there is a story Last Line: But tattered pride replaces. Subject(s): Masks | ||||||||
Behind each mask there is a story; It tells of thwarted things, Of hopes deferred, of dreams defiled, Of hurting outward stings. Sometimes a smile, a mirthless laugh Conceal a broken heart; Behind the grotesque face and painted lips A jester plays his part. Disguised, the bandit shoots and threatens, Plundering for his treasure; 'Neath the domino of satin black The dancer seeks his pleasure. Behind each mask there is a story; Ah! these sad and funny faces, The smile, the shrug, the cynic's pose, But tattered pride replaces. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...GOETHE'S DEATH MASK by LINDA GREGG THE ROLE OF ELEGY by MARY JO BANG MASKS by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH SHE DRIED HER TEARS, AND THEY DID SMILE by EMILY JANE BRONTE MASKS by RICHARD EUGENE BURTON THE MASK by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES |
