SUNSET, by ISABEL WHITEHOUSE TOPPIN First Line: In the glory and splendor of sunset Last Line: The ship of my dreams sailed away! Subject(s): Evening; Regret; Sunset; Twilight | ||||||||
In the glory and splendor of sunset, At close of a long, weary day, From a barren shore, lonely and dreary, The ship of my dreams sailed away! I was hopeful and young when I launched it, To sail for the Isle of Success; Aspirations and efforts were noble, Its mission, to cheer and to bless. A light on a shore beckoned onward, 'Mid storms on a wild, heaving sea, Through the mist and the fog of life's billows; -- And I knew that it beckoned to me. We moored at the port of its leading, For the "fuel" of "lessons to learn;" For storing "provisions" of knowledge; -- A soul's wealth to give in return! The day at the port was a long one; The lessons and tasks were severe; The anchor was rusted with waiting; -- And the skies, until sundown, were drear. At last came the twilight -- a sunset! And at close of the long, weary day, From a barren shore, lonely and dreary, -- The ship of my dreams sailed away! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOURNEY INTO THE EYE by DAVID LEHMAN FEBRUARY EVENING IN NEW YORK by DENISE LEVERTOV THE HOUSE OF DUST: 1 by CONRAD AIKEN TWILIGHT COMES by HAYDEN CARRUTH IN THE EVENINGS by LUCILLE CLIFTON NINETEEN FORTY by NORMAN DUBIE TO KNOW IN REVERIE THE ONLY PHENOMENOLOGY OF THE ABSOLUTE by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
