WAITING, by INEZ SHELDON TYLER First Line: Earth wore the beauty of promise Last Line: I wait for what -- god knows. | |||
Earth wore the beauty of promise When the woodland paths we trod, The fairies played In the sylvan shade, -- The roses and lilies were God. The budding rose, -- Then the rose full-blown, -- The petals have fallen all, And the lily bells In the sylvan dells Are no longer stately and tall. My heart -- like the broken lily, -- My life -- like the faded rose; Do the fairies still play At the close of day? I wait for what -- God knows. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...GIANT RED WOMAN by CLARENCE MAJOR THE VISIONARY by EMILY JANE BRONTE MON REPOS (MY MOTHER'S GIRLHOOD HOME) by ALFRED BARRETT THE DIVAGATOR by GAMALIEL BRADFORD DEATH by STOPFORD AUGUSTUS BROOKE UNFULFILLMENT by FRANCES LOUISA BUSHNELL |
