THE SUNSET HILL, by MARY POLLARD TYMES First Line: Life said to me, 'your days have run' Last Line: Were wet with tears. Now I am wise. Subject(s): Wisdom | ||||||||
Life said to me, "Your days have run Joyful and golden in the sun. Your heart care-free of toils and fears, Your eyes immune to tears. But now when testing time has come, Let not your sorrows smite you dumb." I said to life, "Days have been dear, And filled with laughter many a year, But now, if grief my portion is, I shall go bravely on and this Shall comfort me; for I Have walked with love; love cannot die." Life said, "The draught is in the cup." I said to life, "I drink it up." And as I drank I saw life's eyes Were wet with tears. Now I am wise. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOPE IS NOT FOR THE WISE by ROBINSON JEFFERS SEVEN TWILIGHTS: 5 by CONRAD AIKEN SONG: NOW THAT SHE IS HERE; FOR JOE-ANNE by HAYDEN CARRUTH WISE: HAVING THE ABILITY TO PERCEIVE AND ADOPT THE BEST by LUCILLE CLIFTON WISDOM COMETH WITH THE YEARS by COUNTEE CULLEN FOR RANDALL JARRELL, 1914-1965 by NORMAN DUBIE THE MORTAL WORDS OF ZWEIK by PHILIP LEVINE |
