TOWARD YOU, by CHARLES VAN LERBERGHE Poet's Biography First Line: Of my mysterious voyage Last Line: My soft hand, and my virgin kiss. Subject(s): Love | |||
Of my mysterious voyage I have kept one picture and one song, Here they are; I have brought no roses along For I have touched nothing, near or far; Things love to live, too. But I looked with eager eyes for you In air and water, in wind and fire, In all the splendors the world can bring The better toward you to aspire In the shades of evening. The better to hear you, all around I have harked to every sound, Bent my ear to all the chants, All the murmurs, all the dance Of daylight in tranquillity. The better to touch your trembling breast, To feel on your mouth how my lips would rest, As in a dream of that near bliss I tendered light, and the gleaming sea, My soft hand, and my virgin kiss. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD OFFERING TO A DEAD FRIEND by CHARLES VAN LERBERGHE |
