I KNEW, when dawn of opening day
Chas'd the last lingering stars away,
How forth by thee the lambs were led
To pasture, from their drowsy shed.

I knew, when midday sun was shining,
How, on the grassy bank reclining,
Four times repeated thou didst sing
Thy welcome to the coming Spring.

I knew how, when Alceus brought
The wreath of flowers which he had wrought,
He said, as unto thee he gave it,
Lycoris ask'd, but shall not have it.

I knew—but wouldst thou have me tell,
Who taught me all I know so well?
Love, Love, who on this earth below
Claims all to see, and all to know.
