I AM A SEA SHELL, by GERTRUDE WEBSTER First Line: Put your ear to my lips and listen Last Line: I am a sea shell. Subject(s): Life; Sea; Shells; Ocean; Conchology | ||||||||
Put your ear to my lips and listen I am a sea shell. Through me throbs the swelling tide of life; Cries of new-born babes and wails of dying millions Echo in the empty walls of my being. Through me speaks the voice of the world, Indistinct, indistinguishable. Hear, and you will know the secret of all things: The mysteries of life and death, The rise and fall of nations, Planets moving in fiery orbits, And never-ending time, Which to me are as nothing. Hark! Put your ear to my lips and listen! I am a sea shell. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TANKA DIARY (2) by HARRYETTE MULLEN APPRECIATION by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH TO SOME LADIES [ON RECEIVING A CURIOUS SHELL] by JOHN KEATS ON SOME SHELLS FOUND INLAND by TRUMBULL STICKNEY WITH A NANTUCKET SHELL by CHARLES HENRY WEBB AN ENGLISH SHELL by ARTHUR CHRISTOPHER BENSON SEA LAVENDER by LOUISE MOREY BOWMAN THE WILD BIRD'S NOTE by GERTRUDE WEBSTER HYBRIDS OF WAR: A MORALITY POEM: 4.
