BEAUTY OF EARTH, by HENRY GEORGE WEISS First Line: Beauty of earth / that will not refuse to receive me Last Line: And answer my cry. Alternate Author Name(s): Flagg, Francis | ||||||||
Beauty of Earth, that will not refuse to receive me when the eyes close in dreamless sleep and the heart that beats so strongly now beats no longer.... Beauty of Earth, let some of my dreams be in you fulfilled so that a rose blows more red because of my dying, so that the ocotilla bravely blooming in a gray sweep of desert lifts its head and flaunts loveliness courageously because of my having lived.... Beauty of Earth, take back the dreams, take back the hopes, take back the rebellion, and through and in you let them be reborn, so that they who gaze upon them shall be made stronger, shall be made to feel surge up in their bosoms the spirit of unrest that drives man to dream, to struggle and achieve.... Beauty of Earth, let even my weakness blend into something lovely, so that in softer mood the lover stoops and plucks a timid flower, and breathing in its perfume is made aware of tenderness for the weak, is made aware of tears, and the sorrows of those once living, but now dead.... Beauty of Earth, you alone of all things will not refuse to receive me and answer my cry. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE POET, THE STARS, AND THE BANK by HENRY GEORGE WEISS WHEN THE DESERT BLOOMS by HENRY GEORGE WEISS DOMESDAY BOOK: AT NICE by EDGAR LEE MASTERS A SHROPSHIRE LAD: 44 by ALFRED EDWARD HOUSMAN ULTIMA THULE: MY CATHEDRAL by HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW SONG TOURNAMENT: NEW STYLE by LOUIS UNTERMEYER THE WOOD THRUSH by SUSAN SHARP ADAMS PENISKEE by THOMAS GOLD APPLETON SPRING GLADNESS by JOHN BURROUGHS AN APRIL WELCOME by PHOEBE CARY |
