O soul, be calm, forget thy fear and dread Of what the grave may hold for thee, and know That pain nor grief nor sorrow feel the dead, For they have passed beyond the dreaded foe. They've conquered life and all it holds of pain; They're done with sorrow, pride, and cares that fret; Sweet rest is theirs, forever only gain, No loss to vex their joy with vain regret. The dead alone can taste the whole of life, For only they can see life as a whole; They've laid aside its struggles and its strife, And know that life but tests the soul. Then meet with joy, my soul, that happy day When in a quiet grave you lie for aye. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
